# The Builders Sold, the Buyers Rallied: Who Pays for the Permit Gate

Yesterday started with futures sharply lower after the US elections and ended with one of the broadest rallies of the year. The Dow gained 3%, the S&P 500 1.6%. But underneath, the AI build-out had a very different day. Here is what happened, and what the portfolio did.

## Two markets in one day

- Oil fell almost 9% (Brent below $95) as investors bet a new Congress will push to end the Iran war.
- Bond yields fell to near a one-year low (10-year about 4.89%) and gold rose over 3%, back above $4,000.
- Health care and solar led the gains.
- At the same time chip stocks fell 3%, Micron (MU) 7%, and the companies that build and power new data centres were hit hardest: Vistra (VST) fell almost 14%, GE Vernova (GEV) 9%, a large data-centre contractor 15%, cloud data-centre developers 10-11%.
- This morning Korea extends it: Samsung down about 6%, SK hynix about 7%.

## What the market is saying

Yesterday I wrote that the right to build has become the next bottleneck, after chips, tools and capital. The market agreed within a day, and it was specific about who pays.

It sold the companies that **have** to build in a given place: merchant power producers with Texas growth plans, power equipment, construction contractors, data-centre developers.

It bought the companies that can **choose** where to build: the large cloud buyers such as Amazon (AMZN), which can move compute to other states or countries, and the broad market.

My read: this is mostly a timing and location problem, not a demand problem. Several large brokers say the same. The real test is the Texas regulator’s report on its data-centre queue, due 10 December, and whether any large buyer cuts its 2027 spending plans.

## A strong print in optics

Coherent (COHR) reported after the close: revenue up 50% to $2.37 billion, above expectations, and guided the next quarter above consensus. It expects more than 60% growth this fiscal year. On the call, management reportedly said customers prefer an independent laser supplier after the Marvell-Lumentum deal. I set myself four tests before buying: it passed the one I can verify, and I am checking the rest. I still want a strong weekly close first.

## What the portfolio did

- The portfolio was almost flat (about -0.1%) on a day chips fell 3% and its largest power holding fell 14%. Gold, bonds, health care and energy stops did their job.
- I added world health care before the open, the sector that then led the rally.
- Both energy stops filled in profit at the US open as oil fell. Energy is now about 3% of the portfolio.
- I raised stops under the winners: Amazon, Berkshire, the health care ETF.
- The S&P 500 stop I expected to fill did not: the overnight drop reversed before the open. A useful reminder that night sessions are noisier than the open.
- Cash is about 18%. Tech and AI are about 21%, below my normal range.

## What I am watching

- Today: the Samsung London listing will likely open below my stops, as Seoul fell. I accept that and will re-enter only on a weekly close back above 4,000.
- Tonight: Applied Optoelectronics and Lumentum results.
- Friday: US jobs report and Vistra results. I want to hear that its contracted nuclear power is unaffected. If guidance is cut, I exit.
- Friday after the close: one uranium addition, as planned. Term prices are near records while miners sit at yearly lows.
- Tuesday: inflation data, which decides how fast I add back to AI.

## Risks, stated openly

- If large AI buyers cut 2027 spending, the bottleneck becomes a demand problem.
- Korea and memory are volatile; a second day of heavy selling is possible.
- Oil fell on a political read; one headline could reverse it.

## The takeaway

A hedge only proves itself on a day like yesterday. The portfolio holds the AI theme at a moderate size, protected by assets that rise when it falls. I would rather add slowly, on rules I wrote in advance, than chase a single day.
