# Phones Shrink, Servers Surge: Two Memory Markets, One Price

Yesterday two warning lights came on: a Korean AI data-centre IPO fell 33% on its first day, and phone shipments had their worst quarter on record. Twenty-four hours later, Korea’s KOSPI rose about 4%, Samsung and SK hynix gained 6 to 8%, and that same IPO closed up its 30% daily limit.

The bounce is not the interesting part. The reason is.

## The server spoke

After Tuesday’s close, Super Micro (SMCI) said its September-quarter revenue will land at $18.5 to $19.5 billion. Its own guidance was $14.5 to $15.5 billion. That is roughly 26% above the midpoint of its own forecast, with gross margin of 12.0–12.5% against 10.4–10.8% guided. The company named one reason: more demand for AI platforms.

Put that next to Tuesday’s data. Phones: shipments down 22% in a year. AI servers: beating their own forecast by about a quarter.

## Two memory markets, one price

An AI server carries many times the memory of a phone, and high-bandwidth memory goes only into servers. So the real question for memory prices is which buyer sets them.

- If phones set the price, slowing phone demand means slower price increases, and memory shares can keep struggling even with record profits.
- If servers set the price, consumer weakness is noise, and the contracts for 2027 hold.

One data point does not settle it. The test is still dated: SK hynix reports on 27 October and Samsung on 29 October. Solid quarterly contract increases plus a sold-out 2027 means the selloff was a reset. Flat quarterly prices means the shares were early, not wrong. Today’s evidence leaned toward the first answer.

## Micron: smaller than it sounded

The union at Micron (MU) in Taoyuan, Taiwan now calls Thursday’s action a one-day warning strike, not a break in talks. Its larger Taichung site is in mediation the same day and has not voted to strike. The no-add rule for Micron holds through Thursday; if the strike ends as announced, it lapses on Friday.

## What changed in the portfolio

- No trades. The portfolio rose 0.35% since the previous snapshot.
- The profit floor on the world energy ETF was raised again. It now sits about 2.4% below the price, so a confirmed US–Iran deal, which would push oil down, could close it. That is a deliberate trade-off: the bond position benefits from the lower yields such a deal would bring.
- Korean positions are still marked at Tuesday’s prices. Wednesday’s rally will show up once London, Frankfurt and New York open.

## What I watch next

- Tonight: Meta Platforms (META) on capital spending versus free cash flow, and Lam Research (LRCX) on chip-equipment demand for 2027.
- Thursday: the Micron strike and Western Digital (WDC) on storage.
- Friday: Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) is about 0.4% below my trigger. A weekly close above about $430 would make it this week’s one AI addition. ASML is second in line, after Lam’s guidance. Oracle (ORCL) is back above $130, and its exit rule is still a weekly close below that level.
- No memory additions before 27 and 29 October.

## Risks, stated openly

- If Meta raises spending without the cash to fund it, companies that borrow to build AI capacity get repriced first.
- If Lam guides memory-tool orders lower, the slowdown in memory prices has reached equipment budgets.
- Korean shares now move 4 to 8% in a single session. Memory and Korea are about 10% of the portfolio.
- Well-known investors are calling AI a bubble. That is sentiment, not data, but sentiment moves prices.

## The lesson

Tuesday’s fear and Wednesday’s relief were both loud. Neither changed the plan, because the plan was written before either one: dated tests for memory, weekly closes for new buys, one AI addition per week while the 10-year yield is above 5%. A good process makes the loud days quiet.
