# Eight Red Days for Chips: Why the Credit Stress Sits at the Edge

The US chip index fell for an eighth straight session on Friday, about 16% in total. That is its longest losing streak since October 2008. Seoul opened 3% lower on Monday morning before buyers stepped in.

The 2008 comparison deserves a serious answer, because 2008 was a credit crisis. So the question for this week is simple: where is the credit stress sitting?

## Borrowers versus builders

The stress sits with the borrowers. CoreWeave, a company that borrows to rent out AI chips, has seen the cost of insuring its debt rise from about 3% a year in June to around 11% a year. Some of its bonds now yield 15 to 16%. Credit models translate that into better-than-even odds of a default within five years.

The builders tell a different story. Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) guided its next quarter about 58% above last year. ASML (ASML) says its planned 2027 and 2028 supply will not meet demand. Michael Dell said last week that the memory shortage could get worse in 2027 and last about four years.

A 15% coupon is the cost of capital for one layer of the AI build. It is not the cost of capital for the industry.

## The bond market agreed

On the same day chips fell almost 4%, the US 10-year yield finished the week at 5.09%, down from 5.33% after the inflation report. The odds of a Fed hike in October fell to roughly 15 to 17%.

For the third time in eight days, Treasuries behaved like a hedge during an AI-credit scare. Last week I wrote down a rule: if the 10-year closes the week below 5.10% and October hike odds stay under 30%, I add a first small bond position. Both conditions were met on Friday.

## What changed in the portfolio

- Added on Friday’s selloff: ASML (the planned addition, taken early), one more position each in two semiconductor ETFs, a lithography and photonics ETF, Coherent (COHR) for optical components, Rio Tinto (RIO), junior gold miners and European energy.
- Nebius (NBIS) reached its profit floor and closed with a gain of about 3.7%. That leaves no direct exposure to the debt-funded neocloud layer.
- The memory ETF, SK hynix and Oracle (ORCL) were reset to standard position size at the lows, adding a little to each.
- Cash went from about 17% to about 13% of the portfolio. That is the point of holding cash: using it when prices fall on fear rather than on fundamentals.

## What I watch this week

- Wednesday: Meta Platforms (META) on capital spending, and Lam Research (LRCX) on chip-equipment demand. Same evening, two layers of the AI build.
- Thursday: Western Digital (WDC) on storage pricing.
- Oracle: exit if this Friday’s weekly close is below about $130. Last week it closed at $130.15.
- A first small US Treasury position (7–10 year, IEF): the condition is met.
- Next AI addition: Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), only on a weekly close above about $430 or a pullback near $400.

## Risks, stated openly

- If credit stress moves from neoclouds into the bonds of the large cloud companies, this stops being a valuation reset and becomes a real problem for the whole AI trade.
- A hot October inflation report in mid-November could lift yields again. Then bonds stop helping and only cash works.
- Oil is near $108 with the Strait of Hormuz still restricted. Energy holdings are a hedge, and they will fall quickly if tensions ease.
- Buying into an eight-day decline can be early. Positions are sized small, one standard step at a time.

## The lesson

A long losing streak feels like 2008. The useful work is finding out whether it is 2008: whether the problem sits at the core of the system or at its edge. Right now it sits at the edge. The portfolio added to the builders, exited a borrower at a pre-set level, and is adding the one hedge it was missing. Rules written before the close let the close do the deciding.
