# The Chip-Tool Queue Runs Past 2028: What ASML Says About Memory

Yesterday I wrote that the memory market stopped asking “is there a shortage?” and started asking “when does it end?”. This morning the company that builds the machines for every new chip factory gave part of the answer.

ASML Holding (ASML) reported its third quarter: record sales of €11.7bn, a 57.5% gross margin, net income of €4.96bn, and a fourth-quarter guide of €14.2–15.2bn. The numbers were strong, but one sentence matters more than all of them.

The CEO said that ASML’s planned supply for both 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet customer demand, even after adding about 30% capacity in 2027, and that some customers want to place orders for 2029 and even 2030.

## Why this matters for memory

Every new memory factory needs these machines. Micron’s new cleanroom is dated late 2028. Nanya’s new fab only reaches its first-phase target of 30,000 wafers a month at the end of 2028. Samsung’s next-generation dense memory is not expected before 2028. All of them stand in the same queue that ASML just said is too long.

Nanya, a smaller DRAM maker, confirmed the seller’s side this week: third-quarter average prices up more than 60% in one quarter, shipments down 4–6%, gross margin 85.7%, and management expecting prices to keep rising in the fourth quarter.

So the case for an early end to the shortage got weaker on the Western capacity side.

What ASML does not answer: China’s CXMT is trying to fit more memory bits onto each wafer with a denser (4F²) cell design. That is a density gain on existing machines, not more machines, so it stays on my watch list with its own tests: a hyperscaler qualifying CXMT server memory, and first-quarter 2027 server contract prices (due late December).

## What changed in the portfolio

- Samsung Electronics (SMSN.L) is back: one position bought on Tuesday, a few hours after the earlier positions left through their floor at the London open.
- Constellation Energy (CEG) added: firm, contracted nuclear power. If capital becomes the limit for AI, the capital that does get spent needs reliable power first.
- The MSCI Korea ETF position (IQQK.DE) locked about 14% profit through its floor, but filled about 3% below the level. A fund that trades in Frankfurt while Seoul is closed can jump straight through a floor. Lesson added to my rules: on these listings, either a much wider floor or none.
- Memory positions in the Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) and Micron Technology (MU) were reset at Tuesday’s lows. Same exposure, new starting price.

## Triggers written in advance

- Memory ETF: if this Friday’s weekly close is below about $54.60, I reduce it by two positions. Good news this morning does not cancel a rule I wrote before the news. That is the point of writing it.
- ASML: on my list for one position. Not on today’s reaction. I want Thursday’s Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) results to confirm next year’s spending, and a weekly close holding above about $1,740 (or a calmer pullback).
- Inflation data today: only a soft print plus lower bond yields would open a first small step into longer bonds.

## Risks, stated openly

- A hot inflation number, with the dollar at its highest level since April 2025, would pressure tech and Korea again.
- If a “sold out through 2028” report still sells off, the market is pricing the top of the cycle, not the order book.
- A report from Korean media, not yet confirmed, says SK hynix delayed some advanced packaging equipment orders to next year. If a big buyer slows tool orders, my reading changes.
- About 22% of the portfolio is in cash, plus inflation-protected bonds, gold, staples and energy as hedges. That is deliberate, not idle.

## The takeaway

When everyone argues about when a shortage ends, look one layer up: who has to build the capacity, and how long is their queue? Today the answer came from the toolmaker, in writing.

Patience, written triggers and weekly confirmation. That is the process, in good news and bad.
