## Inflation changed the entry price for AI infrastructure

The September US inflation report is now out. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported headline CPI up 0.6% in the month and 3.7% over a year; core CPI rose 0.3% in the month. Gasoline accounted for more than half the monthly headline rise. For me, that raises the hurdle for buying highly valued growth after a strong earnings headline.

The other important report came from ASML today. It posted €11.66bn of third-quarter sales and a 57.5% gross margin. Management says its planned machine supply for both 2027 and 2028 may fall short of customer demand, and guided to €14.2–15.2bn of fourth-quarter sales. That strengthens the case that new chip capacity takes time. It is a forecast about lithography equipment, not a guarantee that memory prices keep rising until 2029.

My portfolio already has memory exposure through the Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM), Micron and Samsung, alongside semiconductor funds. The 16:43 UTC eToro snapshot put the memory ETF at about 3.5% of total portfolio value. Cash was about 20%, with short inflation-protected bonds, energy, utilities and other diversifiers also in the mix. Those are dated portfolio marks, not live prices for every venue.

The next decisions have clear conditions. I am watching Thursday’s Taiwan Semiconductor results for 2027 capital-spending evidence before considering a small ASML position. For the memory ETF, I will use Friday’s completed weekly close against the previously written approximately US$54.60 level; today’s intraday price does not settle that question. I am not adding long-duration bonds on this inflation print.

A strong tool order book matters. So does the price paid for it, the funding behind AI demand, and the ability to keep flexibility when markets reprice. That is the balance I want copiers to see.
