# The Buyer Printed a New Share, the Toolmaker Ran Out of Parts

Last night two companies reported within the same hour, and together they described the whole AI trade. One is the biggest AI spender outside the cloud giants. The other makes the machines that build memory and logic chips. The market rewarded the first and sold the second. I think the second one told us more.

## The buyer: spending more than it earns

Meta Platforms (META) spent about $34.9 billion on capital investment in the third quarter. Its operating cash flow was about $32.8 billion, so free cash flow turned negative, roughly minus $2.1 billion, for the quarter.

It raised the bottom of this year’s spending range to $135–145 billion. And it created a new class of shares with no voting rights, distributed one-for-one to existing holders from 19 January 2027, which it says it can sell over time to raise capital, pay employees and fund acquisitions. The founder keeps control; new money comes from shareholders. The shares rose about 2% after hours.

**What it means:** a buyer that invents a new share class to keep spending is not about to cut its orders. But the way AI is paid for is changing. Until now the worry was debt and record bond yields. Now the largest spenders can also issue stock.

## The supplier: demand above what it can ship

Lam Research (LRCX) reported record revenue of $8.22 billion, up 54% in a year, and guided about $8.6 billion for next quarter. Three details matter more than the headline:

- It now expects chip-equipment spending above $200 billion in 2027, up from the mid-$150 billion range this year.
- Memory chips (DRAM) lead that growth, ahead of advanced logic.
- It said shortages of certain components held its own forecast below what customers wanted.

The shares fell 6–7% after hours anyway. So even the toolmaker is short of parts. New chip supply needs new tools, and the tools themselves are constrained. That pushes the supply answer further out, which is what the bottleneck thesis rests on.

## What it means for memory

Memory makers leading 2027 equipment spending says they are investing because next year is largely contracted. That supports prices for 2027. The same spending is also the supply that eventually ends the shortage, likely from 2028.

A copier asked what the portfolio does if the SK hynix (27 October) and Samsung (29 October) reports disagree: servers strong, phones weak. The rule, written before the results:

- **Servers up, phones flat:** servers set the price. Hold memory at its current size and keep re-opening shrunken positions.
- **Both flat:** stop re-opening losing positions and let memory shrink toward about 7% of the portfolio.
- **Both strong:** re-open additions under the weekly-close rules.

## What changed in the portfolio

- One new position: BHP Group (BHP), a small starter position in iron ore and copper. Metals and miners are now about 10% of the portfolio.
- The protective stop on the US energy ETF was raised a little.
- This morning’s prices for chip and optics stocks reflect the overnight reaction to Lam and an Asian selloff; Wednesday’s regular session was strong for chips.

## What I watch next

- Friday’s weekly closes decide three things. Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) above about $430 would make it this week’s one AI addition; it is about 3% below. Oracle (ORCL) below about $130 at the weekly close means an exit; overnight it traded below. ASML needs a weekly close near 1,700 or a pullback to 1,500–1,530.
- Micron Technology (MU): one Taiwan union signed a deal, the other is on a 24-hour strike ending Friday morning. No production impact reported so far.
- 27 and 29 October: SK hynix and Samsung, the memory test.

## Risks, stated openly

- If other giants follow with share issuance, the cost of AI spending moves from bonds to share prices.
- The Gulf is escalating: evacuation orders in Saudi Arabia and a drone aimed at an oil field. Oil near $110 helps the energy hedge and hurts almost everything else.
- Korean shares keep reversing 4–6% a day ahead of the results.
- Gold fell on a risk-off day. Hedges do not always behave as expected.

## The lesson

The loudest number last night was a share price. The most useful one was a parts shortage. When the buyer creates new stock to keep buying and the seller cannot ship fast enough, the bottleneck is real. What is uncertain is the price. That is why the rules wait for weekly closes and dated reports, not for after-hours moves.
